This gets them dodge or athletics at advantage AND the other players they're tied to (up to two) can each try to save vs strength if the player fails their roll.
In case of an event they can swing down under the rock. Have a few places where there is rock sticking out where they can drive in a few pitons and tie their ropes.

What they are trying to do is quite hard actually and they must make up for their low lvl and HP by thinking logically to solve the challenge. If the dice favor them and they climb without a problem but you still want the thing to have some challenge to it some Stirges come and attack the climbers to distract and maybe make them fall to their death. If they fail they lose their grip and the next one on the row makes strength check again with advantage. If succeed he doesn't lose his grip and after a while the person who fell can get re-oriented and start climbing again. Thankfully they are tied to the rope! The closest one in the climbing order makes a strength check with advantage. If they fail by 5 or more they lose their grab and fall. If someone fails their Athletics they can't climb higher but stay. If they are thinking logically they would tie the rope from ends to form 1 looooong rope and tie that around their waists. The followers have advantages for their climbing now. First player goes up with pitons (DC15 Athletics) at half their speed (and an easy Perception check?) to find the most suitable place to stick the piton. They probably have pitons & ropes in their backpacks. I also make people roll Dex saves to find their footing or land prone, maybe even halve the fall damage. Dropping from even 20 feet could be lethal for lvl1-2 characters. All monsters, all the time!ĭefinitely have some 5feet-ish wide ledges every 30 feet or so to have a pseudo check point.
