Drew Barrymore is a sweet former teacher who has no idea that she's been reliving the same day over and over, due to brain damage caused by an accident, added to her family's (and community's) efforts to play along to spare her the repeated devastation of learning she's an amnesiac. Why It Works: The basic premise of 50 First Dates is kind of sad, and that's not ignored by the comedy, as we're introduced to Adam Sandler's Henry Roth, a guy who harbors no guilt for the way he romances tourists and then sends them packing. Story In A Nutshell: Sea life veterinarian and womanizer falls for an amnesiac who forgets who he is every day. Perfect Quote: "How you served five years under her, I don't know. It lives in the grey areas, even when it comes to its supporting characters, and with an R-rating, it takes advantage of its freedom with consistent, raunchy hilarity. We see it with Harper finally coming out to her family as well as with her dad, Ted Caldwell (Victor Garber) finally becoming mayor during the Happiest Season ending. Why It Works: One of my favorite aspects of this 2020 romantic comedy is the argument it makes about being true to yourself and how only good things can come from honesty (even if it takes a while to get there). But the thing is, Harper has yet to come out to her family, which further complicates things. Story In A Nutshell: Abby Holland (Kristen Stewart) decides that the perfect time to propose to her girlfriend Harper Caldwell (Mackenzie Davis) is at Harper’s family’s annual holiday party. And not, not in a friendly way, although I think we're great friends. Well, that perspective along with Jason Lee hilarity and good old fashioned Jay and Silent Bob jokes.
